About Surajpur

Situated in one of the most remote and culturally and ethnically diverse states of India, Surajpur is the gateway into the heart of India. Geography of Surajpur

The district of Surajpur is located in the state of Chhattisgarh, a short distance away from the border of Mardhya Pradesh. It is surrounded by Koriya district on its west, Korba in the south, Surguja and Balrampur in the East and on the north with the state of Madhya Pradesh. The Geographical location of Surajpur city is 23.22°N 82.85°E. It is situated at a mildly high altitude of 528 metres (1,732 ft) from the sea level with the total area of 2,786.68sqkm. There are six Tehsils (Taluks) in the Surajpur district, which are: Pratappur, Odagi, Bhaiya Than, Surajpur, Ramanuj Nagar, Prem Nagar. Surajpur town is located at a distance of 256km from the State Capital Raipur, along the river Rihand.

Climate of Surajpur

Although the state of Chhattisgarh has been blessed with abundance of natural forest and ecological diversity, being a tropical region, the climate of the state is usually on the higher side. This remins despite of the presence of hills and thick woods. Surajpur is no exception. Like the rest of Chhatisgarh, Surajpur experiences hot and humid climate. There are three main seasons; Summer, Monsoon and Winter. The summers are usually boiling hot with the mercury regularly touching 45°C. The normal rainfall between the months of June and Septmber, the months of the South – West monsoon is around 1056.8mm. The total number of rainy days are around 57 in this period. The North – East monsoon ends by mid December. Winter arrives in December and lasts until March, when the temperatures begin to rise.

Administration of Surajpur

The town of Surajpur is the district administrative headquarters of Surajpur district and is a Nagar Palika. The district of Surajpur was formed on the occasion of the Independence Day of India on 15th of August, 2011 along with eight other districts. Mr. G.R. Churendra is the current District Collector of the district, hailing from Balod in Chhattisgarh.

Population of Surajpur

As per the Population Census of 2011, the population of the city of Surajpur is 20,189 of which 10,430 are males and 9,759 are females. The female sex ratio in the Surajpur Municipality is 936, which is lower than the state average of 991 (per 1000). However, the child sex ratio is quite lower at 867 whereas the state average of child sex ratio is much higher at 969 (per 1000). The total child population (age 0 – 6) of Surajpur is 2,649. The total population of Scheduled Tribes amounts to 15.34 % of the total population, while the population of the Scheduled Castes makes up for about 6.45% of the total population in the Surajpur Municipality.The literacy rate, according to the 2011 Census is relatively high at 79.89% which is higher than the state average of 70.28%. Out of the total Literacy, male literacy is around 86.74% while female literacy is considerably lower at 72.66%.

Out of the total population of 20,189 about 6,810 have been employed or engaged in work and economic activity. The number of working men is higher at 5,408 than the number of women engaged in work, which is 1,402. Out of the total employed population of 6,810, 83.80% have fulltime work while 11.55 are marginal workers.

More than 40% of the state of Chhattisgarh is covered in forests and hence is home to a number of tribes. There are several local and tribal languages in Chhatisgarh. However, in the cities like Surajpur, Chhattisgarhi is spoken by the commoners alongside Hindi, while English is also spoken in the region, but to a lesser extent. The majority of native residents of Surajpur belong to various ethnic and tribal groups with a rich cultural heritage and history. Kudargarh

Devoted to the goddess Maa Bageshwari also known as Ma Kundargarhi Devi the temple is built atop a small hill. Kundargarh is a famous religious and spiritual centre and is one of the most famous temples in the region . It is located at a short distance of about 25km from the city of Surajpur and is connected by a well maintained road. If you are making the trip for spiritual reasons, the best time to visit the temple is during the Navaratras. However, if you just want to enjoy its unique location in the woods, the ideal time to visit is November to March.

Shiv Temple

Around 60km from the city of Surajpur is Pratappur, from where the temple of Shiv can be reached. The temple is in the village called Shivpur, at about a distance of 4km from Pratappur. This temple is famous for the Mahapuja, or big religious ceremonies devoted to the god Shankara, or Shiva on the occasion of Shivratri and Vasant Panchami.

Mahamaya Mandir

One of the oldest temples in the region and one of the most revered and respected one, the Mahamaya Mahndir is located at a distance of about 41km from the Surajpur city. Devotees from faraway lands throng to the temple for the blessings of the Mahamaya Devi. Although the temple is a little far from the city, there is a daily free bus service which the pilgrims can avail and it is provided by the Bhakt Mandaly from Surajpur. The temple is decorated extensively during Navaratra and there are huge religious ceremonies everyday.

Visitors to Surajpur can also travel to the local markets to taste the delicious local, ethnic food, or buy some ethnic wear made on handlooms in the local shops. Or they can just go for a quiet sojourn to the Sarassore reservoir, a beautiful lake surrounded by hills and trees.
